Solar installation in Marrakesh: mistakes to avoid

Common mistakes and recommendations from our experts.

Marrakesh enjoys excellent sunshine, which makes it an ideal city for solar. But the installation still has to be well designed. Here are the mistakes our engineers see most often, and how to avoid them.

1. Sizing on a single bill

In Marrakesh, consumption varies a lot between winter and summer because of air conditioning. A system sized on a spring bill will be too small in July; one sized on the August bill will overproduce the rest of the year. Base the design on 12 months of bills.

2. Forgetting the effect of heat

Panels produce slightly less when they are very hot. In midsummer, on an exposed roof, this loss is significant. Air must circulate under the panels, modules must suit high temperatures, and the production estimate must take heat into account.

3. Neglecting dust

Dust and sandstorms leave a layer that reduces output. Plan safe roof access and regular cleaning with water, without abrasive products or high-pressure washers.

4. Ignoring shading

Palm trees, parapets, water tanks, antennas or a neighbouring building: a shadow on part of the panels can lower the output of a whole row. The study must map shading at different times and seasons and place the panels accordingly.

5. Putting the inverter anywhere

An inverter placed in full sun or in an unventilated room overheats, reduces its power to protect itself and ages faster. It should be installed in the shade, in a ventilated place that is easy to reach for maintenance.

6. Underestimating the structure and wind

On a flat roof, the structure must be ballasted or anchored according to wind loads and the strength of the slab, without damaging the waterproofing. An undersized structure is a risk for both the installation and the building.

7. Choosing on price alone

A very low quote often hides equipment without warranty, missing protection devices or a rushed commissioning. Use a certified installer, for example one holding AMEE's Taqa Pro label, ask for data sheets and written warranties, and plan monitoring to check actual production.
