Why hospitality and industry now measure their carbon footprint.
A few years ago, carbon footprints were mostly a topic for large corporations. Today they appear in tenders, customer questionnaires and labels. Moroccan hotels and manufacturers are increasingly asked to measure and reduce theirs.
The reference method, the GHG Protocol, sorts emissions into three categories:
For many hotels and industrial sites, electricity is one of the largest items, and one of the easiest to reduce.
Companies exporting to Europe are increasingly questioned by their customers about the carbon in their products. The European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) already covers certain sectors, such as cement, steel, aluminium and fertilisers. Even outside these sectors, many buyers now ask their suppliers for carbon data.
Travellers, agencies and hotel groups look at the environmental commitments of properties. Labels such as Green Key, run in Morocco by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, recognise hotels that cut their energy and water use.
Every kilowatt-hour produced by your panels replaces one bought from the grid. The reduction in scope 2 emissions is simple to calculate from production, which monitoring records continuously. For hot water, thermal solutions also reduce the gas or fuel oil you burn (scope 1).
